Modern Foreign Languages

Resilient Aspirational Courageous

At AldermoorFarm Primary School, we teach Spanish as our modern foreign language throughout Key Stage 2.

At our school, we understand the importance of learning a new language and equipping our children with language learning skills. To do this, we support pupils to develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages through introducing the Spanish language and culture in enjoyable and stimulating ways. We develop children’s understanding of the wider world and other cultures-giving children the Cultural Capital they need for future success and to support them as they continue learning languages when they make the transition to secondary school.

To ensure access to a high-quality language curriculum, we implement the Language Angels scheme of work across Key Stage 2. This will progressively develop pupil skills in foreign languages through well-planned weekly lessons, which will be taught by class teachers. Children will progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge organised around age-appropriate and cross-curricular topics and themes.

The units are progressive within themselves as lessons build on the language and knowledge taught in previous lessons.

Language is recapped through ‘Do now’ activitiesat the start of each lesson. As children progress through the lessons, they will build their knowledge and develop complex language. Grammar and Phonics are integrated and taught discretely throughout appropriate units and are built on over the four years of language teaching.

The Language Angels scheme of work provides an engaging programme to follow with differentiated work to support children with SEND or EAL, and also to challenge the more able children.

A yearly Spanish day is planned, where a focus can be put on the culture as well as the language. This is designed to be an enjoyable day where the children can develop their understanding of another culture.

Each class in Key Stage 2 has an MFL floor book to clearly demonstrate progression of language and vocabulary skills across units of work and the year. In addition to this, each pupils has a Spanish vocabulary book where they can collect and practise the words they have been learning.

Teachers use these books to support them in making assessmentsabout what children know and where they might need more support.

Reviews in the teaching of Spanish include work scrutinies, learning walks, pupil and staff voice. All of this information is gathered and reviewed to help inform future curriculum developments.
