Resilient Aspirational Courageous

Here at Aldermoor Farm Primary school, it is our aim to provide an ambitious History curriculum providing knowledge, developing understanding of concepts, making links and creating confident, creative and resilient life-long learners in History

We link History with other core and curriculum subjects, including English, by using high quality texts as secondary sources.

Our curriculum embeds the key knowledge the children will need to prepare them for the next phase of their learning and provides lessons that will enable them to remember facts about particular periods of history and key historical figures.

We aspire to give children the cultural capital they need for future success by planning lessons which create curiosity, critical thinking and creativity.

History is taught regularly from EYFS – Year 6 and planned to show progression of both substantive and disciplinary knowledge which will embed understanding.

Each lesson begins with a historical question to engage the children with historical enquiry.

Knowledge organisers give children the key knowledge they need to remember and a ‘Do Now’ at the start of each lesson helps the children with retrieval practice.

When appropriate, we will use primary and secondary sources, use of the outdoor environment and links to other curriculum subjects to engage children fully with their learning.

Across the Key Stages, children are able to study significant events and people from local history to make the curriculum relevant to their own experiences.

Each term, there will be a memorable experience to hook the children into the topic: for example, a visit to a place of historical interest or a visitor.

Children who need support in lessons will be given scaffolded resources to ensure they are able to access the History curriculum.

The children will demonstrate substantive and disciplinary knowledge both in their written work and when talking about what they have studied in History.

Clear evidence of progression will be demonstrated in long term planning, monitoring of books and pupil voice by the end of the school year. Through these, there will be evidence of themes being revisited across year groups and key stages.

Assessment tasks at the start and end of each unit and monitoring will support teachers with assessment for learning which will be used to plan the next steps for learning.
