Art and Design

Resilient Aspirational Courageous

Intent

At Aldermoor Farm Primary School, we aim for all children to leave our school as creative, imaginative and resilient artists, who have the confidence to develop a range of pieces of work. Through our art curriculum, we inspire our children to have the aspirations to fulfil their potential in art and design. Our pupils are given the experience of a wide variety of artistic techniques such as – drawing, painting, collage, sculpture and printing. We develop cultural capital, and enhance pupils’ knowledge, through studying a range of diverse artists.

Implementation

Our Art and Design curriculum is based on the National Curriculum, which outlines the knowledge and skills taught in each Key Stage.

Art is taught weekly across Key Stage 1 and 2 to ensure a clear progression of skills across a unit of work.

Formal elements of Art are taught and revisited, ensuring progression and repetition in terms of embedding some of the key learning.

A ‘Do Now’ at the start of each lesson gives children time to reflect on their learning, to review and develop their art work and make links with previous lessons.

Children who need further support in art lessons are given this through additional modelling and amended resources.

Impact

Pupils use sketch books across school to clearly demonstrate progression of artistic skills across units of work and the year.

Assessment tasks are used at the start of each unit in order to determine what children already know.

Pupils’ resilience in Art is improved through each child being given time to evaluate final pieces, give their opinions and make improvements to their work.

Reviews in art include workscrutinies, learning walks, pupil and staff voice. All of this information is gathered and reviewed to help inform future curriculum developments.
