Protective Behaviours

Protective Behaviours

Keeping children safe is what we do here at Aldermoor Farm Primary School.

One of the programs we do to encourage this is Protective Behaviours

Protective Behaviours is a practical down to earth approach to personal safety. The aim of the programme is to teach the children about how to feel safe, how to talk about their feelings and how to recognise safe and unsafe feelings. This encourages an adventurous approach to life that satisfies the desire for fun and excitement without violence or fear. Protective Behaviours help children to recognise and trust their intuitive feelings (Early Warning Signs) and to develop a range of strategies for self-protection.

The programme focuses on two key themes:

  • We all have a right to feel safe all of the time; and
  • We can talk with someone about anything, even if it feels awful or small.

The sessions are specifically tailored to meet the needs of all year groups, from Foundation Stage to Year 6, and usually take place over a four-week block.  If you have any questions or queries, please speak to your child’s class teacher who will be happy to tell you more about the programme.

The NSPCC run a campaign called PANTS, which helps parents, carers and teachers of 4 – 11 year olds keep children safe from abuse. Like the Green Cross Code, it takes a potentially tricky subject and gives us the tools to talk about it in an engaging and age-appropriate way. Please see the leaflet attached below for further information about the PANTS campaign.

The NSPCC has also created a video in British Sign Language with subtitles and aim to teach deaf children about the Underwear Rule and encourages them to share secrets that upset them with a trusted adult.
